Spotify Launches Lossless Audio Days After Apple Music’s New Feature

Lossless streaming on Spotify is now available for Premium subscribers in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, and more, with over 50 markets to follow soon, offering a richer and detailed listening experience.

“The wait is finally over; we’re so excited lossless sound is rolling out to Premium subscribers,” said Gustav Gyllenhammar, VP Subscriptions, Spotify.

Lossless audio is the newest and highest quality of audio playing for music on the app, with up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC compared to Spotify’s previous highest sound quality, ‘Very High’, which is up to approximately 320kbit.

The feature “prioritizes quality, ease of use, and clarity at every step, so you always know what’s happening under the hood. With Lossless, our premium users will now have an even better listening experience,” said Gyllenhammar.

Lossless will be available on mobile devices, desktops, tablets, and many devices that support Spotify Connect, including Sony, Bose, Samsung, and more.

For the best listening experience, streaming lossless music on Wi-Fi using wired headphones or speakers on a non-Bluetooth connection, like Spotify Connect, is recommended. 

On September 10, while some listeners took to X to express their excitement for the long-awaited feature, others responded with comments that Spotify only released Lossless because people have been leaving Spotify due to Apple Music’s new migration tool that allows you to import playlists from other streaming services.

One user commented, “LMFAO 5 years after being announced. They only doing this cause people recently started leaving spotify en masse.”

As of June 2021, Apple Music added Lossless and Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos for its listeners, unlike Spotify, which teased Lossless in 2021 but delayed its release until now. 

While Spotify may be late to giving listeners what they desire, Spotify remains the most popular streaming service with 696 million monthly active users globally, including 276 million Premium subscribers.

Once Lossless becomes available, premium subscribers will receive a notification on Spotify and can begin listening to their favorite artists like Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, or Kendrick Lamar with richer and more detailed audio on their devices. 

Hopefully, there will be more new features to come, similar to Apple Music, like Dolby Atmos for listeners.

Here’s how to enable Lossless audio on Spotify:

1. Open the Spotify app on your phone, tablet, or desktop.
2. Tap the profile icon in the top-left corner.
3. Go to Settings & Privacy→ Media Quality.
4. Select lossless audio.
5. Repeat steps for desired devices.

3. Select Change quality Settings
4. Switch to Lossless audio quality
