The Modern Family alum is set to play Daisy Buchanan live onstage.
Just when the world of musical theater defied gravity all across the entertainment and beauty world this year thanks to the smash-hit film adaptation of Wicked, Sarah Hyland will replace Eva Noblezada in The Great Gatsby, who will wrap up her performance in the role on January 30, 2025. Whilst Hyland makes her debut at the Broadway Theatre on February 10. She will star opposite Ryan McCartan as Jay Gatsby, who begins performances on January 21.
Hyland shared the news on her Instagram story with a throwback selfie of herself wearing a flapper dress, pearls, and a 1920s-styled wig. She said, “Ten years ago, I hosted a Great Gatsby-themed NYE party. Now I’m playing THE Daisy Buchanan on @bwaygatsby on BROADWAY!!!!!!”
She is best known for her role as Haley Dunphy in the mid-2010s sitcom Modern Family. However, she is no stranger to Broadway as she debuted at age 16 as Jackie Bouvier in the 2006 production of Grey Gardens. Her most recent work was from earlier this year as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors.
Meanwhile, the Great Gatsby’s current cast features Noblezada, Jeremy Jordan as Jay Gatsby, Noah J. Ricketts as Nick Carraway, Samantha Pauley as Jordan Baker, Sara Chase as Myrtle Wilson, John Zdrojeski as Tom Buchanan, Charlie Pollock as George Wilson, and Eric Anderson as Wolfsheim. Additionally, Terrence Mann will take over the role of Wolfsheim from January 8 to April 20.
The Great Gatsby opened on Broadway back in April and it won one Tony Award this year for best costume design of a musical. Based on the 1925 novel of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of its publishing this upcoming year.
Another win for the production is its centennial celebration for the novel on January 16 with a benefit in partnership with the New York Public Library, featuring a gala performance of the show to toast Jordan, Noblezada, and the two performers “passing the torch” to Hyland and McCartan.
As for Noblezada’s next move now that Hyland will take over the Gatsby role, Noblezada will return to perform for a limited run of Hadestown at London’s Lyric Theatre from February 11 until March 9. There are also rumors that the Hadestown reunion engagement will be live captured, but it has not yet been confirmed or addressed, according to Deadline.
There is no word on Hyland’s further plans for Broadway after her run on The Great Gatsby. However, ACHDA will have more updates to follow with the hope that Hyland will succeed on her return to Broadway and will have more stage opportunities to come.
