Emmy-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, who plays the beloved kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Howard, on the hit ABC comedy Abbott Elementary, is teaming up with Vice President Kamala Harris to protect women’s reproductive freedoms.
Ralph, 67, will appear alongside Harris, 59, at a reproductive rights event on Wednesday in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The two will discuss the implications of the Supreme Court’s decision last year to overturn Roe v. Wade, eliminating the federal constitutional right to an abortion.
Since Roe V. Wade has been overturned, activists and lawmakers have sprung into action to enshrine abortion protections into federal law. Ralph has been an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and reproductive justice. In 2022, Ralph spoke at the Bans Off Our Bodies rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, amid the country waiting for the Supreme Court ruling that later reversed Roe v. Wade.
At the rally, Ralph, who is also the wife of Democratic Senator Vincent Hughes, delivered a truth that connects with many women.
“No one else should have the right to tell me what to do with my own body,” Ralph said at Band Off Our Bodies in 2022.
Additionally, Harris has been leading the administration’s efforts to protect and expand abortion access since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Swing state Pennsylvania is a key battleground in this fight. The reversal of Roe v. Wade struck a profound blow to women’s rights across the United States. For decades, Roe v. Wade has been the cornerstone of reproductive freedom, ensuring that individuals have the right to make decisions about their own bodies without undue government interference.
Its reversal not only threatens to roll back decades of progress but also undermines the autonomy and agency of women in making decisions about their reproductive health. Additionally, the erosion of abortion rights has far-reaching implications for gender equality, economic stability, and public health. Therefore, the efforts led by Harris and others to protect and expand abortion access are crucial in safeguarding women’s rights and ensuring that everyone has the ability to make informed choices about their health and future.
The event will likely rally supporters of abortion rights and highlight legislative and legal paths forward to ensure nationwide protections. With the 2024 presidential election approaching, the issue is expected to be a major factor motivating voters across the political spectrum.
Combining star power with political muscle, Ralph and Harris aim to spotlight what’s at stake and inspire action to safeguard women’s fundamental freedoms over their own bodies and healthcare decisions.
