In a massive move toward advocating for fair access to tickets to live events, a group of invested celebrities, including big-name artists like Lorde, Green Day, and Billie Eilish, have recently publicly supported the Fans First Act bill.
So far, almost 300 artists from various music genres have come together to support the Fans First Act: Dave Matthews, Fall Out Boy, Sia, Cyndi Lauper, Train, and Becky G, in addition to Lorde, Green Day, and Billie Eilish, to name several. Each music performer that is championing the bill signed a letter to Congress titled Fix the Tix. The letter explains why the entertainers are endorsing Senators John Cornyn and Amy Klobuchar’s bill.
“We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price,” the letter reads.
“We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act to combat predatory resellers’ deceptive ticketing practices and the secondary platforms, which also profit from these practices,” the letter furthered. “Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art.”
The act seeks to address issues that have plagued the ticketing industry, specifically resellers’ and scalpers’ indiscriminate use of automated bots. Additionally, the aforementioned act strives to foster a more leveled playing field for fans by imposing more regimented regulations within the ticketing ecosystem.
One of the key objectives of legislation is to reign in the utilization of automated bots whose primary function is to unscrupulously purchase tickets within mere seconds of their release, only to turn around and sell them at unrealistic prices on secondary markets. The sad part of all this is that many fans are left out of the live concerts and show experiences. In restricting the activities of resellers and scalpers, the Fans First Act is taking a stance that will ensure genuine fans can have a better chance of securing tickets at their actual face value.
I can’t stress enough just how vital this piece of legislation is as it will help to support the resolution of an issue that has plagued the live event industry for several years. Sporting events, concerts, and other live performances have been on the trend to become even more inaccessible to everyday people who are left with the experience of being priced out of their attendance at these events because of overly inflated ticket prices on secondary markets.
Capitalizing on their public influence, these artists are not only taking a stand against the use of these automated bots but also standing up in support of fans’ rights to access a more equitable and inclusive experience for all. On a personal note, I know how frustrated I am when I plan to attend a concert and make my plans accordingly.
I go to the website, waiting for the tickets I want to go on sale, only to click the buy now button and get an error message that all tickets have been sold out. I then try going to a secondary ticket source, but I’m only faced with ticket prices that are astronomically high. I then have to decide whether I want to pay this significantly jacked-up price, as I am sure that some of you have, or whether I want to sit out the concertgoing experience this time. The Fans First Act will help to regulate all of this.
As the bill rests in Congress, the support of countless celebrities will be vital in helping build momentum and gathering support for this crucial piece of entertainment-based legislation. With their voices raised in solidarity with fans, celebrities are working to ensure that meaningful change will happen. This is going to help usher in a new era where fairness and accessibility are uniform for all.
