Millions of Granola Bars Get Recalled Because Potential ‘Presence of Metal’

According to officials, MadeGood, a popular granola bar sold on Amazon and in other stores such as Target, Whole Foods, Wegmans, and CVS, was voluntarily recalled due to possible metal contamination.

Riverside Natural Foods Inc. initiated an investigation on December 9 after seven complaints were received. The Chicago-based parent company stated that the recalled products “were manufactured and have identified the source of an isolated issue in the manufacturing process that has been corrected.”

Since December, the company and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have made updates and recall classifications.

“We’re imitating this recall out of an abundance of caution and commitment to the well-being of our valued customers,” the company said in a statement.

On February 11, the FDA officially classified the recall as Class II, the second-highest level, which means that the products could cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” for customers who consume them.

“We are voluntarily recalling certain MadeGood granola bars as a precautionary measure due to a potential safety hazard. There is a very small risk that some of our granola bar products made between January and November 2024 may contain a piece of metal,” Riverside Natural Foods said in a statement.

According to Today, over two million MadeGood granola bars, including flavors such as chocolate chip, cookies and cream, and mixed berries, have been recalled. More assorted flavors are also being recalled; the eight total flavors were distributed across the United States and Canada.

Customers who purchased from MadeGood can return their items to the food stores where they originally bought them and get a full refund. The recall affects products with various UPCs and best-by dates.

“The company has remedied the issue and tested the new processes to ensure that any future is fully mitigated,” Riverside Natural Food said.

MadeGood isn’t the only company experiencing recalls this month. Other company brands, such as Popular Pet Brand and Blue Ridge Beef, have recalled over 5,000 pounds of their Natural Mix due to salmonella concerns.

“The piece of metal is a small, flat brush bristle and highly unlikely to be present in our products.” Riverside Natural Foods put on their website regarding the granola bars.

Since December, no injuries have been reported from MadeGood products.
