One Direction alum Liam Payne‘s death is still under investigation as Argentinian officials wait for the results of a toxicology report.
But until those results come back, which could be upwards of two weeks, the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office is calling his death “inconclusive.” Officials need to confirm whether the 31-year-old was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. A preliminary exam showed that Payne had died from both internal and external injuries after his fall from the third floor of his hotel room balcony.
But, there’s a current investigation going on with two hotel employees who are accused of allegedly sneaking drugs into his room at the CasaSur Hotel. White powder, which is believed to be a form of cocaine, was found in his room and has since been sent for police analysis. According to a friend of Payne’s, the two men “sent taxis out to collect packages for him.”
One of the guys was working in the cleaning department. After Liam died, they noticed that one taxi was sent to the cleaner’s home address. The hotel manager asked him why the taxi had gone to his home and when he couldn’t give an explanation, he was fired.
Payne had a few recent setbacks before his death. Notably, his record label unceremoniously dropped him, and his second album was not released by the company. Payne struggled to make his own way in the music business after the massive success of his band, One Direction. He was looking to make his own style of music, but the label was concerned it wouldn’t speak to his fans. Payne’s PR team also cut ties with the singer earlier this month.
Other struggles suggest his drug use kept him from obtaining a visa to return to the United States. His Argentina visit was supposed to end, but had to be extended while he waited for approval. A source says the delay came when Payne had to answer questions about possible drug use. His history with drugs is well-documented. The visa came through two days after his death.
Payne’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, was seen with him on social media just hours before his death, traveling last-minute to Argentina. Payne was seen taking selfies and signing autographs with fans outside the hotel. Payne rose to immense stardom after joining the boy band, One Direction in 2010. Appearing on the British singing competition, The X Factor, the group singed with Simon Cowell’s record label eventually producing 5 studio albums.
The group comprised of then-teenage boys, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Thompson, Zayn Malik and Payne, and made headlines when they released their first album with 4 singes including the hit “What Makes You Beautiful.” The 2012 album, Up All Night, and their follow up Take Me Home, both landed in the top 5 best-selling albums, making them the first to accomplish that feat. One Direction was given the honor of being labeled as part of the a new “British Invasion”, thus creating interest in boy bands once again. Previous to them, NSYNC and Backstreet Boys ruled the charts.
In just the six years in which they were together, One Direction collected seven Brit Awards, seven American Music Awards and six Billboard Music Awards. There are other accolades to their name, but they hold a record for the most-awarded act at the Teen Choice Awards with 28 wins and 31 nominations.
Payne was a father to a 7-year-old son, Bear. The mother of his child, singer Cheryl Cole blasted the coverage of Payne’s death on her instagram page. Reminding everyone, “As I try to navigate this earth-shattering event and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I’d like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being. Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our 7-year-old son.”
