Jon B opens up about Chloe Bailey and Gunna on the Can We Talk Podcast
R&B Singer Jon B is taking some heat after expressing his dislike of a certain track. In a recent episode of the Can We Talk R&B podcast, Jon B calls out fellow R&B star Chloe Bailey and Rapper Gunna for sampling his 1997 hit song They Don’t Know seemingly without his permission.
The 49-year-old singer said in the interview, “They put that ratchet record out that I couldn’t stand, and I wish they never did. They never got my rights to do that record…” The song sample is featured in the 2022 single You & Me, which uses the famous hook and chorus throughout.
Fans on X however, are not in Jon B’s corner, rather, are upset with his use of the word ‘ratchet’ in describing the record.
“Jon B is entitled to feel like the song is trash…and if Gunna never cleared the sample, HOWEVER a white man calling black people ‘ratchet’ is where I have a problem.”
Another fan, “Jon B being a white man calling black people ratchet is a line that’s crossed…Jonathan Buck, you’re done!” A third fan, “Am I the only one who had to google who Jon B is?”
Not all reactions were negative, one fan on X says, “Jon’s been making R&B exclusively for longer than some of you all have been born and is a respected vet in the game…”
Still, the Don’t Talk singer goes on to express his gratitude in the use of sampling his song, saying, “It is a producer and co-songwriter’s compliment, that’s a me compliment. But at the same time, my lane is my lane….and I earned that.”
Bailey, 26, and Gunna, 31, have not yet spoken about the recent comments that went viral on social media. In 2022, however, they paid homage in their music video for the song, recreating the payphone scene that appears in the original video.
Gunna spoke to Revolt TV about collaborating with Bailey, saying, “It was unexpected for my fan base and even hers, too. I’ve never seen her do a song with different rappers. I wanted to do something…and bring it into both of our worlds.”
Jon B is a one-time Grammy nominee, earning a nod for Best Pop Collaboration in 1995, and a six-time Billboard Music Award Nominee. Bailey, with over 4 million Instagram followers and five Grammy nominations herself, is releasing her sophomore album this Friday, August 9. Meanwhile, Gunna is a four-time Grammy nominee whose latest album, One of Wun, came out in May of this year.
